Aftershocks

Aftershocks is a story about Roe getting overturned, and the aftershocks from that decision. The article tells the stories of women and their perspective on the subject. One quote within the story said "...that is the quickest way to completely derail some of the brightest futures that this country may see." And I was immediately inspired and came up with the idea of the lightbulb with the filament in the shape of a uterus. At first it was an intact lightbulb in a dark room, and a colleague asked what it would look like with a broken lightbulb, and that made the imagery perfect. A broken filament prevents a lightbulb from working, but in this image the lightbulb glass is broken while the filament is in tact represents the struggle women are facing perfectly. I utilized many images and my own hand drawing of the filament to create the opening spread art for this feature, and carried the tone throughout.
