Calls for Help
A feature story about how police are often first responders to mental health crises, but are not equipped to handle these situations. Tragic deaths of mental health sufferers are prompting change. I focused on creating imagery that gave the reader the suggestion of hesitating to call 911 because of what may happen. I tried to put myself in the position of the person calling 911, as well as the person having the mental health episode, and how the lights of the police cars might add heightened anxiety to the situation. I found images of family members grieving for supplemental pages, and as the story moved to a more positive direction with groups that have enacted change for the positive and lightened up the the feeling of those pages to invoke a feeling of hope.
